The great and the good involved with GCR Rolling Stock Trust met for the first time this year for a technical review on Saturday 23 July, to assess the forward plans for the next major steps in the restoration of the GCR Barnum carriage in Building no.1.  This was immensely helped by the Trustees having Roger Bulmer of Nemesis Rail, Steve Billings of Kreativ Joinery, Gareth Davies of TAS Engineering on site to assist, reports our CME Pat Sumner.

Leading those present we were honoured to welcome our Patron Col. Edward Cowan and Chairman David Bodicoat of Great Central Railway Society.  We were also very pleased to have Clive Baines of DCRT review this crucial GCR project.

With the completion of two of three key off-site projects – build of first water tanks and 4-up seating units, with very special thanks to Keith Stimpson, (on his electronic CAD keyboard) – main concern was to plan and complete the fitting out of essential underfloor equipment – pipe runs and brake rigging – prior to the return of the bogies from Nemesis Rail of Burton on Trent.

The event, the first face-to-face meet of the principal interests in over 2 years held at the Nottingham Heritage Centre– including those who have had involvement in the rebuilds of our classic 6-wheeler and the first of three Barnum tourist carriages over 20 years – enabled the meet to enjoy a splendid buffet on board Mike Lang’s excellently presented RBR Buffet Car and to see the assembly of the first of the seating units by Steve Billings in the Barnum saloon.

Watch out now for a big game-changing promotional push with the massive support from Robin Jones at Heritage Railway magazine – and the opportunity for you to sponsor a seat on this iconic GCR carriage survivor…..the best seats and even bigger, better view of the line are promised.

Tight timing meant little chance even to sample the delights on board Mike Lang’s brilliantly equipped RBR buffet car – so we will be back soon!
